ABI Research Calls Round One in the High Definition DVD Format Fight

OYSTER BAY, N.Y. --(Business Wire)-- April 19, 2006 -- Toshiba's HD DVD player started shipping to US retailers this week, four months ahead of Sony's scheduled release of its Blu-ray format players. North America represents by far the most important market for the new high-definition formats, accounting for more than 60% of all HDTVs that ABI Research expects will be shipped during 2006.

What does this mean for the prospects of the rival formats? Will HD DVD's earlier entry to the market and substantially lower price tag give it the edge over Blu-ray? The answer is "yes" in the short term, but as time passes, complicating factors may shift the balance.

By the end of 2006, according to the latest update to the firm's Consumer Electronics Research Service, Blu-ray players alone will account for only about 30% of the global high-definition DVD player market, but there is a catch: PlayStation 3. Sony's next-generation game console will play Blu-ray discs, and when it is launched, its large expected sales figures could change the market dominance picture dramatically.

According to ABI Research's Vamsi Sistla, Director, Broadband and Multimedia Research, Sony has another card up its sleeve: its strong relationships with the movie studios. "However," he cautions, "the studios' support is not carved in stone, but is based on the perceived size of the market for a particular technology. If studios see that HD DVD has a higher market share, or continues to increase its penetration, they could support it instead of--or as well as--Blu-ray. They don't really care what technology is used as long as it meets their copyright protection needs and enjoys support from the vendor community."

For example Netflix, the leading online movie retailer, has announced that it will support both formats.

But who will bear the brunt of the extra costs needed to support two standards? Initially, it will probably be shared between content owners and consumers. Releasing titles on two formats simultaneously means that content owners will be less able to benefit from economies of scale. A further consequence of an ongoing "battle of the brands" is that the prices of both players and discs are likely to remain at relatively high levels longer than if there were a single standard.

Does anyone win in such an equation? "Yes," says Sistla. "Retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy and Wal-Mart, who will carry whatever sells."

2.4x DVD+RW DL Specs Published

The DVD+RW Alliance have officially announced the release of version 1.0 specifications for 2.4X rewriting on Double Layer DVD+RW media.

The DVD+RW Alliance announced the establishment of the "DVD+RW DL" format almost two years ago. HP, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media/Verbatim, Royal Philips Electronics, Ricoh, Sony Corporation, Thomson Inc. and Yamaha have supported the new format.

DVD+RW media and writers are designed to rewrite up to a full 8.5 GB DVD+RW. The new 2.4X DVD+RW Double Layer discs will be based on new phase-change materials, which enable writing on both the semi-transparent layer 0 and the more reflective layer 1.

Due to its special characteristics, the new DVD+RW Double Layer media will only be read and write compatible with new specially designed recorders and read out devices. The read out reflectivity on both layers of the new media is very low when compared with traditional single layer DVD+RW media. Red laser reflectivity is specified between 5 and 10 percent for the new media and 15 to 20 percent for traditional single layer media.

The new Double Layer DVD+RW specification includes 8cm disc format and will increase recording time or data capacity, nearly doubling in any application.

Japanese JVC has also announced it has made progress in developing double layer DVD-RW media. The DVD-RW DL format was approved by the DVD Forum last February.

The battery packs were distributed by Memcorp Inc., which has received 17 reports of the batteries overheating, including three reports of minor skin irritations and three reports of minor property damage.

The recalled battery packs were sold with Disney-brand DVD players that are about six and a half inches by five and a half inches with a 3-inch screen display.

They were sold in five styles with a corresponding model number. The model number is written on the back of the unit.

The five styles and model numbers include, Princess, DP3500-PRN; Fairy Flowers, DP3500-FLR; Mickey Classic, DP3500-MC; Mickey Mouse, DP3500-MKY; and Power Rangers, DP3500-POW.

The DVD players were sold at discount and electronics stores nationwide, and at Disney theme parks and through the Disney catalog from April 2005 through March for between $70 and $130.

Consumers should stop using the battery pack supplied with these DVD players and contact Memcorp for a replacement rechargeable battery pack.

Consumers can call Memcorp at (800) 326-0315 or visit the company's Web site for more recall information.
