Terabyte DVD Recorder released.
Hitachi has developed a terabyte DVD recorder, but not for US or Europe due to expected weak demand
Hitachi has revealed the first combined hard-disk drive and DVD recorder that can store a terabyte of data - enough to record 128 hours of high-definition digital broadcasting. Though Hitachi only holds a small part of the DVD recorder market share, the company hopes its new lineup will help to raise its market share and make its DVD recorder business profitable. The new models will be the first that are able to simultaneously record two high-definition programs, and go on sale in Japan next month. Hitachi does not have plans to introduce the new recorders overseas, as consumers in Europe and the US are not as enthusiastic about the technology, especially with the popularity of television set-top boxes like TiVo. The Japanese DVD recorder market is expected see growth of 26% this financial year ending in March. More at International Herald Tribune, 8/25/05.
