Layer Truths
Dual layer DVD’s (DVDR-9) are essentially
two DVDR-5 discs sandwiched on top of one another.
Because of this, every DVD player available
is already capable of reading dual layer discs,
and the compatibility rates are the same as
with DVDR. Showcasing this similarity, Pioneer
recently demonstrated their DVR-106 drive as
capable of burning dual layer discs by simply
changing the firmware. |

The truth about DVDR-9 ..
DVDR-9 is not capable of 9GB of storage. Both DVDR-9
and the replicated DVD-9 are only capable of 8.5GB
of storage.
Just like DVDR-5, DVDR-9 (DVDR DL) does yet not have
a uniform write standard. The first implementations
of DVDR DL will show up as DVD+R DL. DVD-R DL will
also be available, but despite being backed by Pioneer,
it appears it will be in the minority.
Recent drives releases from Sony, BenQ, Pioneer, Lite-On,
and Philips have made DVD DL possible, but the larger
issue is that of media. DL media is more fragile than
standard DVD-R, and more expensive (about $5 to $8
per disc). Also, DVD DL drives and media are only
available at 2.4x. In comparison, there are 16x DVD+R
drives coming out this month for not much more money.
